Berthing geared ships

Vlog: use video controls to play video and set audio level

The location of the cranes of a geared ship on their starboard or port side may require them to berth in a direction other than that preferred by the terminal operator.  This can have a major impact on the quay transfer operation and require additional resources to be allocated to these ships.

The ship and quay crane processes required before unloading and loading operations can begin are shown in a timelapse of the MSC Vigo berthing Trinity Terminal at the port of Felixstowe in the UK. As well as booming down the video shows the ship's gear bins being put on the quay and the quay cranes position themselves along the quay.

C

CSS Code & Cargo Securing Manual

The transport of containers by sea posses significant challenges due to constantly changing sea and weather conditions.  The safety of the ship and the protection of its crew, containers and the marine environment is paramount. This vlog highlights the importance of the IMO's Code of Safe Practice for Cargo Stowage and Securing (the CSS Code) and the role of the Cargo Securing Manual in ensuring this.

Geared ship design

Vlog: use video controls to play video and set audio level

The design and layout of fully cellular geared container ships and multipurpose geared ships is examined.  Videos show two fully cellular container ships (the NYK Clara and Victoria) and the Floragracht a multipurpose geared ships with cranes along is starboard side.

Kiel Canal

Vlog: use video controls to play video and set audio level

The Kiel Canal which bypasses the Jutland Peninsula, provides an alternative route for ships up to about 1,700 TEUs capacity sailing between the North Sea and Baltic Sea.  The introduction of direct calls to Baltic ports by ships as large as the OOCL Germany (examined last week) has significantly reduced the number of container ships using the canal.

Largest container ship

Vlog: use video controls to play video and set audio level

The vlog examines the size and layout of the OOCL Germany which is currently the largest container ship afloat. A timelapse is included of the ship being worked at the Port of Rotterdam’s Euromax Terminal in the Netherlands. The ship is one of six sister ships known as OOCL’s G-Class which entered service in 2017 on the Europe to Far East trade route.

Lashing cage operation

Vlog: use video controls to play video and set audio level

One of the most dangerous jobs unloading a container ship is releasing the twist locks which help secure containers stowed above deck.  The operation which is shown in this vlog is not easy to observe and many in the industry do not appreciate its impact on overall ship-to-shore performance rates.

Low Sulphur Fuel Regulations

Vlog: use video controls to play video and set audio level

An overview of the changes to international regulations which comes into force at the start of 2020 and a look at the possible negative impacts it will have on shipping lines, terminal operators and shippers. This change is an amendment to the IMO’s MARPOL Convention and requires all ships sailing in international waters from the 1st January 2020 to reduce the amount of sulphur oxides present in their exhaust gases. This is aimed at improving the environment around ports and waterways, and requires ships to use either more expensive low sulphur fuel oil or other technologies to reduce the level of pollutants in their exhaust gases. This will have an immediate impact on container services as a rise in fuel costs will cause shipping lines to increase freight rates and sail slower to reduce fuel consumption. This will impact schedule reliability and may well have a knock-on impact on terminals if more ships arrive off schedule or if shipping lines drop port calls by altering their rotation schedules

Tank Container Codes

Vlog: use video controls to play video and set audio level

Tank containers may display both a Size Type Code and an ADR Tank Code – both codes are 4 digits long and contain both alpha and numeric characters.  The size type code is managed by the ISO and the ADR code is defined by the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR).  The vlog examines both codes and explains their purpose and how to differentiate between them.

Unstuffing General Purpose Container

Vlog: use video controls to play video and set audio level

There are many small shippers that use containers and when it comes to stuffing and unstuffing a container the operation can be very simple.  A few workers can unstuff a container manually in a couple of hours, but it is surprising just how much cargo can be transported in one container.

Wider Beam Ships - 4000 to 5800 TEU (captions)

Vlog: use video controls to play video and set audio level

Since the start of the millennium many of the ships built in this capacity range have had beams exceeding this 32.2m Panama Canal limit with lengths that give a more optimal beam to length ratio of approximately 1:7.  The vlog explores the drivers behind these ships and the trades they are deployed on.
