The Kiel Canal which bypasses the Jutland Peninsula, provides an alternative route for ships up to about 1,700 TEUs capacity sailing between the North Sea and Baltic Sea.  The introduction of direct calls to Baltic ports by ships as large as the OOCL Germany (examined last week) has significantly reduced the number of container ships using the canal.
